St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, Greta

Nestled in a paddock near the intersection of the Hansonville – Moyhu Rd. and Reserve Rd. Greta, St. Brigid’s Catholic Church is often referred to as a landmark when directing people to the local sporting complex. According to the Wangaratta Chronicle (26 October, 1901) the church was blessed and opened on Sunday 20 October, 1901 by ‘His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Reville, assisted by Fr. Byrne.’  It was noted that ‘a large congregation of all denominations’ was present and after Mass the Bishop administered Confirmation to 30 children and preached ‘an impressive and instructive sermon.

Since that time the church served the Greta community, first as part of St. Patrick’s Wangaratta Parish, and then since 1955, as part of the Holy Cross Parish of Moyhu

From 2008 because of the shortage of priests and the declining numbers of the community there has not been a regular Mass at the church.

A series of meetings discerned that the church would close and the final Mass was celebrated on 31 January 2010, led by the late Bishop Joe Grech, DD. On Sunday 25 May 2014 at 11.30 am, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the church site.

As was the wish at the final Mass, donations collected on the final day have largely paid for this plaque.
